Dear Penguins,
My name is Peter Kuhns, and I am excited and humbled to continue my work as an Associate Principal for E.B. Scripps Elementary.
I grew up in a suburb outside of Chicago where I was inspired by teachers at every level of my K-12 education. As I entered college, I had the aspiration of becoming an educator because of the profound effect my teachers had on me. After attending Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, I was fortunate enough to get accepted into Teach For America in New Orleans. For four years I taught middle school Science and Social Studies, along with coaching football and basketball. It was my experience teaching at a low-income inner-city charter school that opened my eyes to the inequities that exist in our society, and its effect on our educational system. This experience catalyzed my life’s mission to ensure that all students receive an excellent education.
After four years in New Orleans, my wife Christy convinced me to move back to her hometown of San Diego. In truth, after visiting a few times it didn’t take that much convincing. In San Diego, I spent a year as a founding teacher of SOUL Charter School in Solana Beach followed by two years as an elementary STEM teacher in Imperial Beach.
Outside of education, I enjoy reading, and practically anything that involves being active and outdoors. I have learned the pivotal role leadership plays in a school, and am looking forward to contributing in whichever way I can to the already illustrious school system in Scripps Ranch.
Sincerely,
-Peter Kuhns
